Youth Summer Rugby

Summer Programs

There are currently some 20+ youth rugby clubs playing in Virginia in the summer.  

During the summer, Rugby Virginia offers the following programs:

    • 7-a-side single-gender Tackle rugby (7’s rugby) at the High School level, U17 & U19

    • 7-a-side Co-ed Touch rugby (with RV Mods) at the Youth (Non-Contact) level, U07, U09, U11, U13 & U15

    • 11-a-side single-gender Tackle rugby (with RV Mods) at the Youth (Contact) level, U13 & U15

The season runs from early June and ends with the Youth Summer Rugby Tournament in late July or early August.

Player Registration

Rugby Virginia does NOT directly register youth or high school athletes for rugby. 

Athletes wishing to play rugby should join a convenient member club of Rugby Virginia.

Laws & Modifications for Summer Rugby

Youth Summer Rugby is coached and played under a set of modifications suited to the age, maturity, and experience of athletes playing summer rugby.

The Laws & Modifications that shall be applied to summer youth rugby by referees officiating youth rugby matches played under the auspices of Rugby Virginia are available online at: Laws for Youth Rugby .

Touch Rugby

Touch: u-8, u-9, u-11, u-13, u-15. 

All touch teams are coed. 

Children play 2-hand touch “7s”rugby (7 players per team on the field).  The 2-hand touch game is the only difference from the standard game.  All the other rules apply.

Tackle Rugby

Tackle:

  • boys u-13, boys u-15, boys u-17,

  • girls u-15, and girls u-17.

The modified tackle game provides kids with a safe introduction to tackle rugby.  All other elements of rugby, including scrums (uncontested) and lineouts are allowed.

There are NO coed tackle teams!
